Aging Well

Aches and Pains of Growing Older

Aches and Pains of Growing OlderMost of us expect some discomfort as we age," says Gregory Stout, D.O., internist at Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network. "But there’s no reason to suffer needlessly." The key: don’t let daily aches get the better of you, and know when it’s something more serious.

How to distinguish between a strained muscle or joint and a serious condition? "It’s common for muscles to ache after a strenuous activity, like raking leaves or pulling weeds," Stout says. "If you have severe chest pain, or numbness in an arm or leg during or after the activity, get immediate medical attention." See your doctor, too, if there’s swelling or redness.

As for day-to-day pain—for example, headaches, arthritis or a sore back—there are ways to minimize it, says geriatric nurse specialist Melissa Armstrong, R.N. Take acetaminophen or prescribed medication, use heat or ointments on sore joints, or try massage. Stretch before doing anything strenuous.

"Lifestyle choices make a difference," Armstrong says. "Make sure you get enough sleep, maintain a healthy weight and exercise regularly." She suggests yoga or Tai Chi to improve flexibility and balance.

Don’t ignore the pain, Armstrong says. "Over time, it wears down the body’s defenses, causing sleeplessness, depression and social isolation. If your pain persists, don’t complain to friends—tell your doctor," she says. "And make an effort to go out, do activities you enjoy and surround yourself with positive people, not complainers."
